This is a hand crafted moldavite cabachon ( half polished, half raw ) pendant. Total weight is 6.60 Grams/33.0Ct including bail.
This is an oval cabachon, prong set into a swirled heart background. The back is open in a similar swirled heart shape in the opposite direction. There are 3 attached circular bails wide enough to support a chain up to 4 mm. The artist hand stamped sterling signature can be seen on the back side. This piece has different light reflections from every angle revealing the uniqueness that is each moldavite.
This pendant is handcrafted and set by a long time New England artisan, Liz Nichols.

Polished and faceted moldavites are the easiest to identify as being fake. Air bubbles + lechatelierites can easily be seen throughout this pendant leaving no doubt to authenticity.
History
Known as the Emerald that fell from the universe, Moldavite is a tektite (Meteorite) with a hardness ranging from 5.5 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale. The asteroid hit the earth during the Middle to Upper Miocene age in what is now known as the Ries Crater in Barvaria (Germany). For geological reference the miocene age ( ~ 16 - 11.5 million years ago ) is the time period that South America drifted west to near its present position, the Andes mountains continued formation, and many of the continents shifted to current bounded landscapes. The material from the impact was sent flying into the atmosphere, cooled down & formed the melted glass into what is now called Moldavite. The splash field or primarily landing of the melted crystals returning to earth is in the areas of South Bohemia (Czech Republic). Moldavite is not found in any other region of the earth.
